Review: Dearest Clementine by Lex Martin

Title: Dearest Clementine
Series: Dearest Series #1
Author: Lex Martin
Release date: 25th May, 2014
Rating: 4.75 Stars!
Cliffhanger: Thankfully no
HEA: GOD YES

4.75 beauties!:

*****J’adore/Nous Adorons: World-changing, we could not put it down even if we dared to try. And, we might just read it again. We would recommend it to anyone.
****Liked it: It didn’t shatter our worlds. Something held us back from that amazing moment of complete obsession, but we definitely liked it a lot. We would recommend it to our friends.

For those who skim: Clementine and Gavin’s story is not just a beautiful story of love and trust but also one where you get to witness both characters grow and learn about themselves as well as learn how to rely on each other!

Twenty-year-old Clementine Avery doesn’t mind being called bitchy and closed off. It’s safe, and after being burned by her high school sweetheart and stalked by a professor her freshman year of college, safe sounds pretty damn good.

Her number one rule for survival? No dating. That is until she accidentally signs up for a romance writing class and needs material for her latest assignment. Sexy RA Gavin Murphy is more than happy to play the part of book boyfriend to help Clem find some inspiration, even if that means making out…in the name of research, of course.

As Gavin and Clem grow closer, they get entangled in the mystery surrounding a missing Boston University student, and Clem unwittingly becomes a possible target. Gavin tries to show Clem she can handle falling in love again, but she knows she has to be careful because her heart’s at stake…and maybe even her life.

Recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

Um yes we care!!!! Clementine’s hard exterior instantly piques the need to find out why she acts the way she does. Gavin’s carefree and coaxing nature towards Clem makes you a hard fan that begins to root for them from the very first chapter. I think Lex does an absolutely amazing job developing her characters. You can see the internal struggles they both go through. I got to the point where I just wanted to shake them to get them to their epiphanies sooner but was also crying because of course we have to watch them endure their trials. It is through their relationship that Clementine and Gavin are ultimately able to find their answers and move past their emotional traumas.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

Let’s just say lots of sleep was lost while reading this…so yes, go read it…NOW

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

Everything was very realistic and relatable. You feel that you could drop right into their world and immediately immerse yourself in their relationships and stories.

4.Pure entertainment value.

The story was awesome. It was suspenseful and funny and heartbreaking. It was just all sort of goodness with so so many feels.

Best part of this is that it is only #1 in Lex’s Dearest Series!!!

Review: The Vigilante’s Lover by Annie Winters & Tony West

Title: The Vigilante’s Lover
Series: The Vigilantes Book 1
Author: Annie Winters & Tony West
Release date: 13th January, 2015
Rating: 3 Stars
Cliffhanger: Yes
HEA: Unknown

***Good enough: It was worth reading. Once. We liked it. It was good enough that we don’t regret reading it and would be willing to read others in the series.

For those who skim: The idea behind the story was good. I just felt that I was trying to understand her world more than the actual story

Spies, vengeance, and one seriously well-dressed man

An addictive new romantic suspense series from the desk of USA Today bestselling author Deanna Roy/JJ Knight

Mia trembles as she reads the letter that arrives from Ridley Prison.

Seduction. Rope ties. Descriptions of things Mia has never experienced or known.

The man’s words are desperately passionate. He longs for a woman who must have given him a fake address. Mia’s address.

She plans to send the letter back. He’s a convicted felon.

But his words gnaw at her. She’s never done anything dangerous. And no man has ever talked to her like this.

So Mia writes him, pretending to be the woman he desires.

It’s her one dark thrill in her dull, solitary small-town life.

The man is in prison for another fifteen years.

It’s harmless. She is safe enough.

Until he escapes.

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

Not really. I wanted to, but I just couldn’t quite get there.

Development. I still don’t understand much about the characters other than the few pieces of information that have just been repeated over and over again.

Relationships between characters. also didn’t feel the connection between the characters like I wanted to. Where was the spark? I felt no fireworks or anything between the H/h. I don’t even see how they like each other.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

I could totally appreciate the new world that the author created, but I felt like I was playing catch up THE ENTIRE TIME. The world itself was more interesting to me than the actual main characters at this point. I definitely want to read vol. 2 in order to understand the world and the characters better.

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

I suppose so. It definitely makes sense, but it took a while to really understand what was going on.

4.Pure entertainment value.

That was maybe the biggest problem. I don’t think I was over the top entertained by this first installment. Everything felt so… eh. UNTIL they got to the silo. That was when I started to be excited about reading.

In conclusion, I am sticking around for Vol. 2 of this because I so desperately want it to be awesome!

Review: The Queen by S.A. Gordon

Title: The Queen
Series: The Young Royals #2
Author: S.A. Gordon
Release date: 28th May, 2015
Rating: 3 Stars
Cliffhanger: No
HEA: Yes

3 Stars

***Good enough: It was worth reading. Once. We liked it. It was good enough that we don’t regret reading it and would be willing to read others in the series.

There’s an empty seat beside her throne …

Queen Alexandra Elizabeth Diana is newly crowned and newly single. But, contrary to popular belief, being a monarch doesn’t make the dating game any easier. While foreign royals and millionaires may be of a similar social standing, they are woefully inadequate when it comes to winning her heart. Alix needs someone who understands her world and who also sees that behind the crown is a young woman who just wants to fall in love.

But the situation may not be as hopeless as it seems. Someone Alix has known her whole life is secretly in love with her. And, while he may not have the breeding or bank balance expected of the Queen’s consort, nothing will stop him from trying to win Alix’s heart …

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

Alix is sweet. But I found myself bored. She’s supposed to be this strong silent type of a woman, but she’s so weak and inconsistant. Does she want to get married? Let’s beg someone to be with us, shall we? Just kidding, let’s beg another man. No! Let’s push away a good friend because of our weird pride and a relationship we know isn’t going to work out. Poor Stuart. He was so hopelessly in love with her. I’m glad she saw the light in the end.

I could appreciate the love that the siblings had for each other. Their support was wonderful. I also found her uncle, Phil to be enjoyable.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

As far as world building, the settings were easy enough to imagine. However, I’m super sad to say, I skimmed. I skimmed the junk out of this book. It is such a dialogue light book that the details get lost in the long paragraphs between lines….even in the middle of a conversation.

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

Definitely. It was relatively plausible to have Alix have the relationships she had. But Alix’s personality was so inconsistent it was hard to keep things… plausible.

4.Pure entertainment value.

I was mildly entertained. I wanted to like this book so much more than I actually did.

Review: Fool’s Gold by Staci Hart

Title: Fool’s Gold
Series: Hearts and Arrows #3.5
Author: Staci Hart
Release date: 10th February, 2015
Rating: 4.75 Stars
Cliffhanger: Kinda (It’s in the middle of a series)
HEA: Kinda (see cliffhanger)

4.75 Shinies!

If you skim reviews: If you like a wise and witty grandma, solid writing, and solid banter, then give this a shot. Be warned, this is a prequel to the story of J&J in Doe Eyes. You can read it before or after. I vote after.

Life is never black and white.

It’s a fact Josie knows too well, right next to wanting what you can’t have. And even though Jon is her friend and colleague, he pushes those boundaries on the regular. There are times when she feels like she can’t escape him, and others where she doesn’t want to.

The tension twists tighter every time they meet, but Jon’s unavailable. Live-in girlfriend of years unavailable. As much as Josie cares about him, and as much as she wants more, his flirting is a cruel tease. Unfair. And she’ll push him away if she has to, if that’s what it takes to protect herself.

As far as Aphrodite’s concerned, Jon and Josie getting together is inevitable. But keeping them together may be harder than any of them realize, and what Josie thinks is her happy ending may just turn out to be fool’s gold.

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

HECK YES, WE CARE! Josie just fights so hard to not to want what she doesn’t think she can have. Jon is forever doing the right thing. He’s basically perfect… except he isn’t. But that’s what makes him great.

Development. Because we have read Doe Eyes we are already familiar with a lot of the story, but that doesn’t stop Staci from setting everything up with a fresh new feel.

Relationships between characters. Staci really knows how to show character dynamics. It was cool to see the relationships between Tori & Jon, Jon & Josie, Anne & Josie, and Josie with her family. It was great to actually see Anne in this book when so much of Doe Eyes is about her death.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

I could easily visualize everything.

“Did it hold our interest?” Yes. There was no skimming for me. Each thing I read from her is better and better. It’s a quick novella filled with angst, love, and heartbreak.

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

Yeah, of course. It’s set in our modern day without anything crazy going on.

4.Pure entertainment value.

Fool’s Gold is actual gold. It will make you laugh and make you cry. There is so much humor woven between each chapter, it makes it a little less painful for when your heart actually breaks.

The only thing I wanted more of was more Perry and Dita. Also I have lots of choice words for that snake, Hera.

Review: The Consequence of Revenge by Rachel Van Dyken

Title: The Consequence of Revenge
Series: Consequence #2
Author: Rachel Van Dyken
Release date: 9th June, 2015
Rating: 4 Stars
Cliffhanger: Nada
HEA: Of courseee

4 stars!
Spinning with silliness and antics, this second book is better than the first. Max finally finds his lobster!.

If you skim reviews: This book is for those of you looking for something silly to read. It will be jokes on jokes on jokes! Max is a loveable hero and Becca is sweet as candy! This is not an angsty book. It has some feels in there, but should be read simply for the fun of it!

After losing his best friend to another guy, the notoriously too-confident Max Emory suddenly feels lost. He may have devastatingly good looks, an abundance of charm, and a claim to one of the biggest hotel empires around, but he has no ambition anymore. So when his fed-up friends decide they’ve had enough of his moping, they sign him up to be the next bachelor on the reality series Love Island. And between his pride and his forged signature on an ironclad contract, Max just can’t say no.

Now he’s stranded in paradise with twenty-four women, one terrifying goat, and Becca, the breathtaking barista who already turned him down back home. The closer Max gets to Becca, the more determined he becomes to win her over. As she gets to know him better, things start heating up. But is Becca really after Max’s heart—or is she after the cash prize she could claim once the cameras stop rolling?

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

I cared about Max because I could appreciate how good of a friend he was to Milo in the first book. I felt like I would have liked to get to know the characters more. I wanted more, simple as that. The relationships are very clear between characters. I loveloveloved Jason’s relationship with Max. Becca was wonderful.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

Everything was pretty clear. The story arc… I think I wanted more from the story. Maybe, I was looking for more “feels”. Regardless, I didn’t find myself skimming! It held my interest all the way through the book.

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

This is not exactly a plausible story, but I did find I was able to escape into this comedic fantastical world.

4.Pure entertainment value.

I usually adore Van Dyken’s work, but I found that with this series she has too many jokes that stack on top of each other like Jenga, waiting to crash down on you. The very beginning of the story started out pretty solidly then the next thing I knew it was jokes on jokes on jokes with no build up. Thankfully, the jokes became better timed about half way through the book. It was just the opposite of the problem that the Consequence of Loving Colton had where the first half was the bomb dot com and the second half got caught under a landslide of jokes. All things considered, I enjoyed this book. I am a sucker for RVD and will continue to read all of her books. I own almost every one of them as it is. hahah 🙂

****Liked it: It didn’t shatter our worlds. Something held us back from that amazing moment of complete obsession, but we definitely liked it a lot. We would recommend it to our friends.

Review: Hardcore Volume 3 by Staci Hart

Title: Hardcore Volume 3
Series: Hardcore #3
Author: Staci Hart
Release date: 19th March, 2015
Rating: 5 Delicious Stars
Cliffhanger: Finally No!
HEA: Ugh yes

*****J’adore/Nous Adorons: World-changing, we could not put it down even if we dared to try. And, we might just read it again. We would recommend it to anyone.

If you skim reviews: If you like a story about redemption, solid writing, and solid banter, then give this a shot. Be warned, it is an intense emotional rollercoaster. I love a good ending!

It’s time. Time to tell the truth. Time to face her past and step into her future.

Starting with Van.

Cory will wait to the beat of the ticking clock for him to come back. To see what she’s done and make the final judgment. As much as she holds onto the small hope that he’ll still want her, she’s ready for rejection, ready for the pain. As ready as she can be, at least.

It’s time to make things right, not only with Van, but with Jill. With Jade. With everything.

No more running.

1. People: “Do we care?”. Development. Relationships between characters.

Everyone is such a mess. Cory is on her road to redemption. Jade is… well fuck jade. Van is dealing with all this bull, but he’s so hawt. I love him. Erin is just being a great friend. Jill is growing. It’s a great ending dude. SO GREAT.

Development. THIS IS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. So much gets cleaned up in this final piece. It’s awesome. Everything you want will happen in this book. It wraps up everything. Van is.. AHH! Fuck that bitch Jade, but really.

Relationships between characters. Staci really knows how to show character dynamics. Erin and Cory slay as besties. Erin is a kick as friend. Jill & Cory: Momma bear! I’m so glad that they have each other. Cory & Van: So much angst. So great. I now want ice cream. Also that closet scene! BAM. Cory & Jade: Sweet sweet victory. Fuck Jade.

2. Plot: “World-building”. Story arc. “Did it hold our interest?”

I could easily visualize everything. It definitely did hold my interest. There was no skimming for me. Each thing I read from her is better and better.

3. Plausibility: Can we suspend our sense of reality while we read these and still have it make sense?

Yeah, of course.

4.Pure entertainment value.

GRAND GESTURE TO END GRAND GESTURES. REDEMPTION. LOVE. FRIENDSHIP. SISTERHOOD. ICE CREAM. DO IT!

Also: Fuck Jade.
Also: BEST GRAND GESTURE EVER.

 NOPE
HEA: YES
This is a light funny as all get out read! I F’LOVED IT! It is the perfect read to help you recover from an angst fest or something intense. It’s sweet and cute as well as gratifying when they finally get it together! It was smart. It was real. Staci writes characters that you can relate to and love stories that feel realistic. No one does it like she does. It isn’t a bubble gum romcom, but rather something closer to home filled with feels & laughter.

GIVE ME COOPER OR GIVE ME PATRICK. I DON’T CARE!

PS. This is the best book of the summer for me so far. No one creates character dynamics like Staci motherfkn Hart.
